Situated
some 300 km south-west of Dar es Salaam,
Mikumi National Park offers wide variety
of wildlife in its 3.230 Sq .km area.
Baboon, buffalo, hunting dog, eland,
elephant, giraffe, hartebeest, hippo,
leopard, lion, impala, sable antelope,
warthog, waterbuck, wildebeest, zebra
and the greater kudu can be seen here.
Over 300 species of birds have been
observed in the
park some of which are Eurasian migrants
that are present from October to April.
Also reptiles including crocodile,
monitor lizard and python are resident
in Mikumi. Weekend excursions departing
from Dar es Salaam every Saturday noon
to Mikumi are organized by several tour
operators.
The Mkata flood plain has always had the
reputation for being the home of large
numbers of wild animals. Stanley
crossed the plain in 1872 on his return
from "finding" Livingstone. He crossed a
little to the north of the present Park
boundary despite the Mkata river being
in full flood at the time.
